Well the day has come and the rumours are starting to spread like wild fire across the globe about allegations of an affair John Terry has had with the girlfriend of England team-mate Wayne Bridge. Now everybody is talking about taking his England Captaincy role away from him, or even stopping him playing for England at all, but is this right?

Speculation began to circulate late last week about a story that was brewing, and on Friday 29th Jan a ban was lifted to name the player involved. There was even speculation that Wayne Rooney was involved in some way, but the details are emerging today that it was Wayne Bridge, not Rooney, which is good news for me being a Man Utd fan. I would hate for anything bad to happen to our main man.

So what do I think about it all? And do I think there should be punishment for Terry regarding his position within the England squad?

Firstly, I have no idea whether the details are true, or how true they are. At this early stage it has to be just speculation. The papers think they have the story, and maybe they do, but until a bit of time has passed, and the story has a chance to settle and to gain some truth, I shall not be passing judgement.

If the allegations are true, then I would be extremely disappointed in him, and I would obviously feel very much for his family, but I guess that is a whole other story. This is a personal situation for him, and in my opinion is completely separate from the game of football. If all this is going on then it shouldn’t have any effect on his role of England captain. As much as I may dislike Chelsea football club, I know that John Terry is the right man for the job of captain. We need him as much as we ever have done, especially with the World Cup looming large.

It is obvious that this could effect his game in some way, and if it turned out that he was no longer able to perform as well as we all need him to, and there was someone better for the job, then I would say its tough luck on Terry, and he should be stripped of his captaincy. However, it would be a decision based solely on his current form, whether affected by his personal life or not. If his game is not affected, then leave him as captain. We need all the strength we have if we are to lift the World Cup this summer.

So as this is all so very fresh, and the rumours are spinning out of control, I guess we can only wait and see what develops, but I hope for all concerned that this is all speculation, and that there is no truth in it. Speaking from a football supporters’ point of view, we cannot afford for him to be below par when it comes to the summer, and I hope it is all history by then. But let him keep his captaincy, as you wouldn’t find yourself being sacked from your daily job if you were having problems at home would you!
